Marlborough, USA, and Akiruno, Japan, have once again come together to celebrate their longstanding and cherished sister city relationship. Since last week, seven Whitcomb Middle School students—Daniel, Jayden, Madelyn, Kyre, Kwame, Parker, and Maleah—have been fully immersed in Japanese culture in Akiruno. These students have experienced everyday life alongside their Japanese peers, attending classes, participating in sports, giving performances, touring local landmarks, and embracing family life. They’ve even put their budding Japanese language skills to the test by delivering speeches in Japanese, honoring their hosts with heartfelt words.
Accompanying them are Assistant Principal Eileen Hurley and teacher Andrew Thain, who have been keeping advisor Jennifer Smith updated on the group’s inspiring journey. We couldn’t be prouder of our students and chaperones for their exemplary representation of Marlborough Public Schools; they’ve embraced this experience with curiosity and respect, carrying the spirit of our school community across the globe.
The students return to Marlborough on November 1st, brimming with stories and unforgettable memories. Stay tuned for the 2025 application process to become part of next year’s Marlborough-to-Akiruno exchange for Whitcomb students!
A heartfelt thank you to Jennifer Demos-Smith, Instructional Technology Specialist at Marlborough Public Schools, for helping share the news of this incredible journey.
