Whitcomb Guidance & Counseling Services

A message from the Whitcomb Guidance & Counseling Department:

"Our world is in an unprecedented state, yet at the same time, things that have been long occurring are again coming to light. As counselors, educators, adults, and more simply, as human beings, we are faced again with our tragic flaw - our mistreatment of each other. As a multi-racial, multi-cultural city it is important to acknowledge our diversity and emphasize our belief that, as Suzy Kassem wrote, “You are not just white, but a rainbow of colors. You are not just black, but golden. You are not just a nationality, but a citizen of the world. You are not just for the right or left, but for what is right over the wrong. You are not just rich or poor, but always wealthy in the mind and heart. You are not perfect, but flawed. You are flawed, but you are just.” With this in mind, we work to educate our students not just with academic knowledge, but to develop their character and morals, to be kind citizens of the world, to stand for what is right. As educators, parents, caregivers, members of a society, we are looked to as role models by our young people. Sadly, what has been shown through history is that there is a tendency to turn a blind eye, to minimize, to rationalize, to justify. We must all work to change our approach toward this systemic wrong, to not only say the words but show with our actions that we will change. We will do better. Part of this change comes from within and our own acknowledgement of where we have failed, of the messages we have internalized from our development, so that we may grow ourselves and truly demonstrate the change we wish to see in the world. To be better role models and create a better world now and through the next generation. As Dr. King said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” As educators, as role models, as fellow human beings, we stand with you."
