Mission Statement

The 1LT Charles W. Whitcomb enrolls approximately 1,000 students from grades 6 through 8. We provide a strong academic program that enables each youngster to maximize his or her individual potentials through high expectations and current educational practices and to become valuable citizens in our community. We believe and value the importance of respect, responsibility and academic excellence. We have high standards of performance for both students and educators.

The 1LT Charles W. Whitcomb educates a diverse learning population, offering an array of supplementary programs for students with special needs, English language learners and academically advanced children.

Our curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, offering instruction for all students. Core curriculum areas (balanced literacy, mathematics, social studies and science) are enhanced and supported with art, music, health/wellness, physical education, library/media and integrated technology. The schedule is divided into seven 45-minute blocks with the core academic program. Differentiated instructional opportunities are available to all students daily in English language arts and mathematics. Whitcomb School programs are based on the most current research and data in the field of education. We are developing a wide repertoire of skills for teaching and assessing our diverse learners. Using data to drive and assess instructional decisions for all children allows us to maximize each student's learning potential.

At the Whitcomb School, licensed educators and support personnel are highly qualified. Most importantly, they love their work of educating our children. Our fine staff has received numerous awards and honors. After an extensive self-study, the school received the distinction of continued accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

We are proud to have families who are actively involved in their children’s learning. We have a committed PTO and School Council. We believe that successful schools have strong partnerships with families, community members and local businesses.
